Thursday – the new Saturday? Football mascots – the new ace?

Thursday nights strike me as a good time to be alive/awake… The new Saturday it has long been christened in Oxford town (note to self: make that into a clubnight) – all the Wolf Am I orders are all packaged up and ready to go, and after spending half an hour or so listening to Radio 4 talk about how the Swedish political scene has been taken over by The Pirate Party (an organisation who believe all music, films and related content should be free) and despairing of ever selling anything to Scandinavia again, I received a Swedish order within 24 hours. How fickle the fist of fjord land fate can fondle….

Whatsmore, like so many others across the country I’m definitely getting excited about the new football season, and trying to work out what gig I can coincide a Saturday 15th August trip to Barnsley with… OK, so Coventry might have sold two of our best players, but I can almost smell the football… This video helped immensely – brilliant isn’t it. This Clarence the Dragon Northampton mascot though remains a mystery to me… What a ridiculous creature!

Meanwhile, been to see Wolf Am I, Stagecoach, Stars and Sons and Paul Steel this week, and all were superb. WAI had to put up with fighting kids in Southampton, but it’s a provocative album i suppose so one can understand a little – the latter were at the Alcopopular 3 instore at Pure Groove – which was awesome… Full update with photographs on its way.

Meanwhile massive props to our super pals at Devil Has the Best Tuna Blog – I <3 them, and they <3 WAI – read a post here

Alcopop @Pure Groove this Wednesday w/ Stagecoach, Stars & Sons and Paul Steel

popgroove*Excitement*
It’s the first Alcopop Pure Groove instore (I was so excited to see us on the listings :-) ), and coincides with the stocking of Alcopopular 3 ‘map and bottle compilation’ by said emporium… Great times, free entry and 7pm (ish) start to see:

Stars and Sons (full band) play “Big brash intelligent indie pop” – Huw Stephens
New Alcopop signings Stagecoach (acoustic) rock out “a sumptuous slice of Wilco-esque alt.country” (The Fly)
- with Paul Steel provideing a melodic piano ballad interlude with his “veritable masterwork of pop brilliance” – Under the Radar

And we can all get boozed too in London’s finest record shop – winner? Winner! See you there…

Thieving candles and eating pizza like it aint’ no thing

11EXbigger_biggerAnd now on to the Candle Thieves, who, as well as being covered by them good folks at Heckler Spray have been spilling the beans on exactly how much pizza they eat at Unitedmusic.co.uk… Me myself I haven’t seen this side to them yet – but if they do as well as I’m expecting them too, expect some very fat thieves within the next year or two… J

“Ha ha we always celebrate everything with a pizza. I nearly fell over the other day but I turned it around, so it was pizza time. We said we could get Dominos to cater our joint wedding. Not to each other, we’re not that close”.

Heckler said of them…

The Sunshine Song is what everyone should hear in the morning. It’s utterly charmless (we presume they mean charming) and features nuggets of good feelings. Rainbows, flowers, sunshine, smiles and flattering remarks about people are all on this song”.

All true – and very much what I’d expect an Alcopop office, should we ever have one, to look like (in all fairness, probably without the flattering remarks)…

Whatsmore, much like goFASTER>> who continue to rock up the Hollyoaks vibe, TCT tracks have been singing all over the new MySpace drama ‘Freak’… Look as they soundtrack an androgynous (but strangely cute) girl stripping to her underwear in the opening shot – who I can’t deny looks a little like Sam Duckworth…. Hmmmm – Play the tape…

For fans of The Get Up Kids, Brand New and the X-Certs – WAI in Rocksound

Jesus – our bands have been busy the last couple of weeks! Where to begin I wonder, but just about manage to settle on Wolf Am I… Firstly to announce that the winner of the tickets to their London show and CD single is Thomas Smith with his answer to the question ‘what would you call your pet wolf should you be lucky enough to have one’ – Wolveritus the second. Nice one…

Even more importantly though is the band’s coverage in Rocksound this month, which is nothing short of fuc*in’ awesome (click on the Exposure image to see a bigger, more readable pic). For fans of the X-certs, The Get up Kids and Brand New works for me…. Go pre-order here (oh, and we’re down to the last few album/tee deals, so if you fancy one of those, get on it quick)

What better than a montage..?

So said the directors of Rocky IV, Karate Kid, Pretty Woman, Ghostbusters, Teen Wolf ad nauseum. And oh god of brilliant 8os films, how I agree.

So rather than extoll the genius of the bands, heroism of mass drunken attendees or  relay the ‘I vomited on my own chest’ explosion that a close pal of mine encountered… I shall sum up the Alcopop/BSM party with this photo montage I have created in the time it took for a beleagured My First Tooth to discuss the relative merits of swimming in a pile of coins (a la Scrooge McDuck) this morning over breakfast.

You really should have been there x

Birthday tribute to Kev BSM/PoP

kevbsmWe may all be busily celebrating Konnie Huq’s (former Blue Peter presenter and red hot fox – no, she really is) thirty-fourth birthday today – busily topping of the icing on Tom Fletcher from McFly’s secret 24th celebration cake and wishing fervently that Ismail I, Shah of Persia was still alive to see in his 512th in style, but spare a thought for the smaller (physically at least) music-based celebrities of Oxfordshire – namely Kev, co owner of Alcopop and lord of all BSM – who turns 26 today…

Happy birthday dear Kev – and may the year be as wretchedly drunken as the majority of the last 25! Short of presents, I instead decided to jet over today to Walt Disney World (it’s been a long one), to Florida to approach some mooks in stupid hats to bring you this, from all the Alcopoppers…

Candle Thieves interviewed and another free MP3

As if Wolf Am I giving away Lex Talionis wasn’t enough – it seems that The Candle Thieves have only gone and added to the aceness of this week, by offering a free song for you all. You see, they’re giving away a free download of our song http://www.musicglue.com/thecandlethieves. “It was recorded around the time of the forthcoming EP but it won’t be appearing on there, or the album so it’s the only place you’ll find it.”

Go for it – its ace!

Meanwhile, some chaps at a blog called beat surrender have been busy interviewing them too – asking them a whole heap of questions, including “You’ve signed to Alcopop Records, did you have other offers and what drew you to that label in particular?” To which Scott said…

“Well we kind of knew straight away they were perfect for us, it was all done very quickly! I was a massive Midget fan growing up, and the label’s inspired by them, and then to have Andy Hawkins (Midget bass player) produce our record, it all just seem to fit. And they add this really cool personal touch to their records, like their compilation in a bottle with a little treasure map, we love that! In a world of downloading and what not it’s awesome to have physical CD’s done in different ways.”

Aw… Thanks lads x

You can read the rest over here….
