Branding themselves as power-pop for BMX kids, Stagecoach may have emerged from the sleepy Surrey hills as an acoustic 2-piece, but now rip up stages a plenty with rock n’ roll Americana in the vein of Weezer, Wilco & Pavement. Singing songs about the usual stuff – ‘hot dogs, cars and girls (sure, sure), TLOBF reckon “Stagecoach manage to match the charm of bands like The Lemonheads, with none of the accompanying substance abuse”. True that!

Hailing from Northampton, My First Tooth is the totally encapsulating, totally spine-tingling indie-folk creation of singer-songwriter Ross Witt and violinist Sophie Galpin. Taking influence from modern indie heroes such as Eels, Okkervil River and Neutral Milk Hotel, My First Tooth have crafted ambitious and beautiful songs aching with subtle heartbroken soul and unwittingly touching melody. XFM suggest they are “Killer pretty stuff”.

Nice as pie and doubly as tasty, this sunshine duo from Peterbrough melted our hearts with their own particular brand of wonderful, weird and whimsical music. Deep thinkers beware, for one can lose themselves here in gentle, poppy pleasures, whilst enjoying soft-hearted sentiments with sinister undertows. The Guardian said “The State That I’m In is one of the most beautiful songs we’ve heard this year”. And they did a garden party tour. Ace!

They are alive… They are the future. Wolf Am I maybe a band of few words, but that’s probably because they let the music speak for itself. Formerly Kill the Arcade, WAI released stunning debut ‘Lead the Way’ on Alcopop Summer 2009. Rocksound say “‘Bon Voyage’ and ‘It Moves The Earth’ will lodge in your memory immediately, while the delayed explosion of ‘The Good Life (1975)’ is delicious as it mimics Brand New. Impressive.”

Stars and Sons is the dazed but loveable brainchild of Mike Lord. After a long summer spent serving melting ice-cream to satanic children at Colchester zoo, Lord realized he would have to do everything within his grasp to avoid employment. Plumping for music instead, he decided on big brash summery pop, all full of layered hand claps and minor chords mixed up with Mike’s beguiling talent for super vocals and keyboard delight. “Nice sound! Well done you in Brighton” said Jonathon Ross.

Hailing from the sleepy town of Malvern, this year Sam’s played well over 100 gigs, ranging from crowded front rooms to large supports with Pigeon Detectives, Scouting For Girls and more. He also popped up at Glastonbury, Latitude and Truck festivals and the BBC Electric Proms. Big things lay ahead for this young songwriting genius. Sam’s debut single, ‘Sideways’ will be released on 10th December by Big Scary Monsters and Alcopop!, as part of BSM’s “Meet & Greet” singles series.

ThisCity have been already been described in review as “like The Travelling Wilburys if it was made of members of Bloc Party and At The Drive In”. Maybe if you throw in the eyeball-popping nuances of Blood Brothers, the same turn-on-a-sixpence disco-jerk rhythms of the more danceable end of punk (think Les Savy Fav or !Forward Russia!), the impassioned cacophony of mid 80s Dischord Records-led emotional hardcore, the pop sensibility of tykes such as The Automatic and subtract the reference to Tom Petty and co, we might just be inclined to agree…

Lush harmonious pop deliciousness from Wakefield’s finest that’s like sun-kissed sex in the summer – only better. Check out their debut single, ‘Spoils Of War’, produced by Ryan Jarman of The Cribs and Edwyn Collins, released in August 2008.

Cut the Blue Wire are probably the most impressive thing to come out of Portsmouth since the HMS Victory. Recorded with John Mitchell at the infamous Outhouse Studios in Reading (Funeral For A Friend, Enter Shikari), debut digital single, ‘Everest’, will appear in May followed by a 6 track CDEP in July.

‘Revolve’ perfectly encapsulates Hush The Many’s ability to capture people’s hearts and imagination through their heartbreaking and delicately dynamic music. The band have already received significant radio play from XFM and had the support of Radio One DJ Huw Stephens, in press they have also won the accolades of the likes of Metro and Drowned In Sound, who describe them as a “a band who threaten to grow and blossom…” .

Brilliant Weezer meets Pavement style pop from Brighton, 4 or 5 Magicians released their debut single ‘Forever on the Edge’ on Alcopop! Fronted by the irrepressible Dan Ormsby, a Radio 1 Huw Stevens session, gigs with the likes of Seafood, Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin and Fighting with Wire and some rather tasty press coverage have gone hand in hand with the start of these boys meteoric rise in the underground indie scene. “The sort of lo-fi attack jam that Kurt Cobain would have creamed over” – Rocksound

Lucy writes beautifully delicate acoustic songs about her 19 year old, female world in a way which can’t help but make you swoon, basking in the sunny rays of summer love. She’s truly a fairytale in the making, and with support slots in the bag with acts like Scott Matthews, Get Cape, Simple Kid, a string of festival appearances, airplay on XFM, BBC Radio 1 and 2, Lucy (and her Caterpillar) will be wriggling across your town ever so soon. “Couldn’t seem any prettier if you played it alongside The Elephant Man” – HighVoltage.org.uk

The Wakefield based two-piece made their very welcome return with a four track single and video on Alcopop! Records way back in March 07, and what a heart-warming EP it was (and indeed is). Lush guitar/organ-led pop songs are always the order of the day from the Pylon and ex-Dugong members, who count Dartz, Huw Stephens and Get Cape amongst their many fans.

Data Select Party are the perfect tonic to help you clutch onto the forgotten summer joy. Imagine a cross between The Rapture and Minus The Bear, with the live energy of a herd of barbaric elephants. DSP are session veterans of Steve Lamacq, played Manchester’s In The City and even joined IWACS as invited guests on their 2007 Summer tour. “Careening through a rapturous twenty minutes of les savy fav-inspired frenzy, DSP allow no room for inertia. handclaps? check. intertwining, spiky clean guitars? check. group shouting? check. disco party? You bet!” – Disorder

Encyclopedia is a two-piece pop band from Yeovil, Somerset, UK. Formed in Feb 2004 because they wanted to support Squirtgun so bad, but didn’t have a band. They are named after the book of the same name. Imagine a cross between a Nintendo and Weezer and you’re half way towards the incredible pop of Encyclopedia! As seen on tour with DSP and Tellison, they wield swirling keyboards, to-die-for happy pop-guitar and deranged grins that are too compelling to ignore. “Music lovers who like their records to be quirky, poppy and a lot of fun are going to lap this up” – Punktastic

Just back from My First Tooth (well, 3 Teeth) playing totally unplugged at Parr Street, Liverpool. Totally captivating stuff that gained a generous audience response and even an unprecedented (for this venue) encore. I felt I heard a previously unnoticed Go-Betweens vibe throughout that gave the songs an added warmth. All together great little set. Please come back to Liverpool with the full set of Teeth soon. Who’dve thought Northampton was cool?
