Andrew WK does the weather…

Every now and then, you’re sitting in a little music venue, and between bands the conversation will turn to Andrew WK. “Have you seen that ‘destroy, build, destroy’ trailer” someone will say – which will be replied immediately with something like “no, but how about that piano battle set up via video in the interview”, or maybe “did you see him vomit at that Queens College show the other day”.

Well here’s another BRILLIANT Andrew WK moment – this time, settling once and for all the age old, ‘who would win in a weather off – WK or Michael Fish’ debate… Move over Mickey, Andrew’s got it down!

The best looking TV show ever?

OH… MY… GOD! This is the first time I’ve ever wished I was an American child – watch this trailer and you’ll understand why!

Destroys things, builds other things out of the wreckage and then destroy them again. Gloriously nihilistic :-) But best of all… It’s presented BY ANDREW WK!!!

Alcopop Rota show and Andrew WK at the Old Blue Last

Oh what an afternoon/ evening/ night was Saturday… Storming times were had by all at the Alcopop@RoTa@Notting Hill Arts Club and a packed club seemed to really dig the show.

My First Tooth performed their luxurious brand of harmonious folk rock, Cat Matador hammered out a tenderly beautiful ‘morose fun’ fuelled set of violin, Stagecoach rocked the joint with bouncy indie pop and finally The October Game delicately swathed the venue with beautiful melody – and as the drinks flowed throughout the afternoon, Nath T. Pyle played a mix of retro hits to keep things ticking along.

I had a superb time, thanks to everyone who came down, and despite risking my life with an ill-advised ‘chicken dash’ across a busy Notting Hill High Street, it was great to hook up with some well known Alcopop faces, make some new friends and meet plenty of folk who knew there were few better places to be on a sunny London afternoon.
Here’s a picture of Stagecoach pwning.

Then, after a few more drinks – it was onto Andrew WK (more words/images about it here), and one of the most passionate, sweaty affairs I’ve experienced since last hanging out with Courtney Love. I danced harder than I ever had before, partied like it was the year 2,099 and actually got to sing a chorus of She is Beautiful with the man himself (he was very complimentary) – before exiting the stage thusly.

Ace!

Saturday night’s alright for gigging… (in Laaandon)

Just one last quick shout to remind you about the Alcopop show coming up this Saturday at RoTa@Notting Hill Arts Club – with The October Game, Stagecoach, Cat Matador and My First Tooth all playing, with free entry. Oh yes!  Incidentally, MFT will be on pretty close to doors as they have to rush off for a soundcheck in Worcester afterwards – so do get down on time. See what the venue says… and know it’ll be ace.

The magical land of the Alcopop! label is populated by wondrous indie-pop, passionate post-hardcore riffers and dreamy folk kids with their hearts on their sleeves. you’ll never want to leave! With live music from The October Game, Stagecoach, Cat Matador and My First Tooth

It’s happening between 4 and 8pm, it’s free entry and all the booze is at happy hour prices so we hear, which means a reet old shindig for all and no lies.  Nathan T. Pyle will be marshalling decks with his fingers of steel, so if you have any requests drop them in the comments box below or @ilovealcopop on Twitter.

Then, post show – and no doubt flush with the joys of 4 exceptional bands – I’m going to be popping off to see Andrew WK at The Old Blue Last playing I Get Wet all the way through… I’m pretty excited! Anyone else coming down?

See you Saturday yeah… Oh hell yeah! And watch this to get in the mood…

Who’s that band you work with… The ones with the shellsuit sleeve?

They’ve received a whole heap o’ plaudits have goFASTER>>, just recently Folly of Youth suggesting “the youthfulness of the band just leaps out of the speakers”. High Voltage add the caveat that “for all the hectic, elastic guitar-keyboard interplay and Haribo melodies, there seems to be a slightly more furrowed brow on the group this time around – as though they’ve moved on from songs about melting shellsuits and orange-skinned sunbed-dwellers to the weightier issues affecting the nation”.

But my goodness, they’ve no doubt ever heard anything quite as special as being reffed by magnificent legend Andrew WK! Yes indeed, the man is a partying hard super-boom legend, and was clearly quite taken with the boys from Liverpool.

Hooking up with our Kev on his recent sojourn loving New York City, oh yeah – New York City… Andrew himself was heard to remark “who are those guys you work with… You know, them with the shellsuit sleeves” – oh yes! It’s goFASTER>> who have obviously come to the attention of Andrew himself via their ‘Flammable Leisurewear’ single. Awesome stuff! I’m going to send him a copy of the EP and see if it’ll fulfill his incredibly high standards of partying hard…. I think it will!

Awesome crocodile on skateboard Alcopop tees available now…

Get startled yeah… I’m watching Nathan Barley and my god I love it as much as when I first blooded my peepers to it the first time around! Sometimes I think that the Alcopop offices should be a little more like Sugar Ape magazine. Sure Kev’s always riding around on a tiny tricycle and ‘cock, muff, bumhole’ is regularly played – but we really need more preacher man costumes.

Anyway – moving on to more important issues… You may note that the second batch of limited edition Alcopop T-Shirts have been ordered, despatched and they’re going to look super ace. Due to extremely popular demand the crocodile design is back, along with Andrew WK’s killer quote that he once scribed on a friend of Kev’s gig ticket – ‘You go and tell your friends that you’re my friend’… But as promised – green and yellow are never to be re-printed, so this time it’s white on red. Oh yes!

As before, there are only 20 of these ever to be crafted and ready to grace the chests of heroic Alcopoppers across the globe (ever). So do feel free to pop into the shop and order one now, and set yourself up to be quite the most handsome kid on your street.

They’re well Jackson!

Andrew WK live in London THIS SATURDAY!!!

Remember that day when Andrew WK said “Also, will you tell me more about Alcopop? I really like that name a lot.” – No? What… It was less than a year ago… Well while you’re refreshing your memory of one of the best days of my life by following this link b’yere… May I also point your attention to the fact that the aforementioned Party King of rock is back in the UK, and playing his first gig in 4 F**KING YEARS, this Saturday at Push Club in London Town!

Quite how excited I am, I can’t quite express, only to say that anyone who has even half a soul, ever lifted a glass in party celebration or would like to wrestle a rabid wolf in moonlight just for kicks – should DEFINITELY be there… Tickets can be purchased for the quite frankly unbelievable price of just 8 quid, and there will DJs (including Pull Tiger Tail and the Semifinalists) before and after, presumably playing party Hard, The Wolf and Close Calls with Brick Walls back-to-back (although I may have made this up).

For more info, pop over to those charming folk at Push Club over on MySpace, and I’ll see you at the front!

Colin Murray is The Family Machine…

And as the radio 1 juggernaut rumbles on, it is with pride and pleasure that we notice it (and especially Colin Murray) is stopping off along the way for a tasty Alcopop or too. That’s right – for not only did the wee Irish champ give the Family Machine their first (of many) Radio 1 play for the upcoming new album (and former free downloadable EP) on Tuesday, featuring the song Got It Made – but he decided to give the majestic Sideways by our boy Sam Isaac a spin the following day.

We don’t know what his exact tipple is (although my chums once met him at the Northern Ireland vs. England match and said he was a heavy boozer) but anytime your round our way, I’ll get you one in Colin! And does anyone else think that his Fighting Talk on Radio 5 is one of the best damn sport-based radio shows around? Me too!

Meanwhile, Kev (Alcopop and BSM) has gone on holiday to New York to see, amongst other things, a solo, intimate Andrew WK piano gig on Sunday… Lucky f**ker! J He’s got a bit of a guestlist too, so if any die-hard Alcopopper happens to be in the big Apple this Sunday, ‘gis a shout and I’ll see if he can get you in (you never know).

We’re A-OK with A-WK!

andrewwk.jpg

You know those days where everything’s coming right, you’re enjoying a happy evening after a great weekend, and then the perfect email pops into your inbox. Maybe it’s from a pal you haven’t heard from for a while who’s got guestlist for a great gig/party, a girl you really like suggesting you get a little fruity that evening – or just maybe it’s from the inspirational Andrew WK (i swear this is true) himself – telling you that your label name is great and asking to hear more about what you’re upto.

Via BSM records, these are Andrew’s exact words – presumably typed in a brief few seconds between partying ever so damn hard!

From: “Andrew W.K.”
To: “Kevin Douch (founder of Big Scary Monsters Records – co founder of Alcopop!)”

Also, will you tell me more about Alcopop? I really like that name a lot. Is that another one of your label imprints?

Much love,
Andrew

Mr WK – Alcopop Records salute you sir….
