This City sign to Epitaph
Man – so much to tell you about… I have been away from the dear blog over the last couple of days, and there are all sorts I need to relay! True I’m sure the world won’t stop turning without the latest Alcopop update – but what good is anything without a little fizzy bottle of joy to moisten your tongue before the real important things kick off.
So anyway… Firstly the BSM 5-a-side tournament with which I shall do justice with a full on post as soon as I have a pic or two. Team PoP did well, very well, and decked in tremendous tie-dye (the likes of which the most elegantly bearded hippie would be jealous about) we romped to the semi finals, only narrowly crashing out to eventual winner Fear vs. Records – but more about that later….
In other news remember them rock n’ roll types This City, who released tres incredible 7″ single ‘We Move’ on Alcopop way back in September ’08… ? Well, we’ve known for about 6 months (shhh shhh) but it was made official a week or two ago that they’ve signed to the mighty Epitaph Records – which is awesome news for all, especially them – putting them in the same stable as Ghost of a Thousand, Thursday, New Found Glory et al!
Inexplicably we still have a few copies of the single hidden behind a wardrobe at Alcopop HQ – so for indie cool points galore (and before I relent and decide to sell them all on eBay), grab one from the shop…. 75p UK postage whatever you pay, be it 1 or 1,000 items.
More news a coming in more blog posts… *phew*
This City – they move!
Oh how we love the Alcopop family – myself and Kev stood like proud parents, (in matching crocodile T-Shirts no doubt) gazing out at awesome bands we’ve been involved with ripping around the country doing brilliant things, and causing hearts to leap for joy on a nightly basis! A small bubblegum tear – I shan’t lie to you – is shed, with every CD, T-Shirt or positive email dispatched.
But as is the lot of an indie that there are also that lusty bunch who come on by, spend a passionate few months (or more) between the Alcopop sheets, enjoy a lusty rendezvous – and sadly must move on, nevertheless leaving both parties with fond smiles, happy memories and more than an occasional wave over the parapet.
One of these is This City, who although I can say nothing about for fear of pre-empting any announcement or exciting news, have recently flown off to Seattle to record an album (you can bet no budget of Alcopop’s would facilitate that
) and will soon be launching something rather exciting on this lucky public of ours. More details when they’re official, but you should definitely look out for the former Alcopop types in the upcoming months.
Meanwhile, the single ‘We Move’ is being taken off’ve iTunes in the next week or two (so get it quick if you want it), and would you believe – we actually have a few copies of their single on Alcopop still sitting around my bedroom. There’s not a lot – but if you want a piece of the action now, before the eBay hunters get involved, do pop on by our shop.
demos, demos, demos…
So I’m back in the country, and after a lazy morning in bed, it’s time to take a few minutes to listen to some of the demos that were a piled upon the mat after Christmas in the Southern Hemisphere (I do listen to them all you know, even if it does take a while).
There’s some really nice stuff thus far (amongst the usual crap), and I have to say – one of the things that delights me about running a small label is when you get something in that’s either exquisitely packaged, or comes with a personally intended hand-written note. You know, something that really excites the eyes. Much better indeed than the band I’ve just slipped in who have provided me with a blank CD of their stuff – nice work chaps!
Unfortunately I ought to keep this post brief, as I have a to-do list the length of the usual Sam Isaac tour date list, but I shouldn’t leave without a quick mention of This City – who have ditched rainy Brighton in favour of Seattle to record their album, and are blogging about it – which is nice. So far updates about drunken scooter races, Minus the Bear and borrowing a glutful of gear from Gibson make me not only want to read it, but be there an’ all.
You can read all about it, and send your love over here…

Fearne Cotton got style baby – spotted sporting This City bag
Fearne Cotton’s a dreamboat! Definitely the kind of girl we’d invite to the Alcopop staff Christmas party (so long as she got the first round in) and no doubt the kind who’d be up for a damn fine evening out, maybe taking in a sweaty gig followed by a kebab/fried chicken in the rain, before stumbling to some dodgy offy where we’d purchase insanely expensive cans of Tusker Kenyan lager. Would there be a fleeting/awkward kiss? Yeah probably, but I’m sure we could move beyond that.
So basically, what I’m saying is that she’d always be welcome at the Alcopop HQ – even more so now after having been snapped wearing a This City Tote bag, presumably containing a copy of the very limited third single ‘We Move’, available at all good record shops, especially this one, about now!
Awesome.
Oxford tonight – You! Me! This City! Dancing!
I sometimes feel a touch bad that when it gets all down and regional on this lovely Alcopop blog, that despite the spread of our bands up and down the country – we tend to focus on Oxford and London when it comes to gigs, dancing and that DJing sort o’ thing.
Well – this morning is no different (sorry), as I felt it pretty much my solemn duty to let you know that tonight at The Regal (you know Oxford residents, that super-club on the Cowley Road that failed but is beginning the process of reinventing itself with a refreshingly indie facelift) will see not only Jack PoP once again taking his rightful place behind a couple of sweaty decks with a bottle of spirits in hand, but also Alcopop favourites This City take the stage!
They’ll be on at 10ish, so make sure you’re in in plenty of time… Oh, and tell em your on Jack from Alcopop’s guest list for a quid or two off. There’s rumours of shots for 50p (as yet unconfirmed), but if they are – I expect to see you on the floor
Here’s a flyer… Capiche
We Move out today – This City single available!
Coming to the end of a pretty bangin’ UK tour – with a show at London Barfly tomorrow (congratulations to Niall and Thomas who won pairs of tickets by the way) – it’s good news for us at Alcopop Records, as today sees Brighton rockers This City release limited edition 7” (to 500) single ‘We Move’… Today!
Full of the kind of heavy disco-based rhythms that have made the boys such a favourite with the likes of Kerrang, NME, Radio 1, XFM and all the other hip places that have taken them to heart – we’re lucky enough to be working with them now before they hit unimaginable heights!
You can get the vinyl from the band when they play live (best), direct from us (awesome), or from any good record shop or your favourite digital music retailer (still bloody ace – you have magnificent taste), and add something a bit sexy to your record (or MP3) collection…
Meanwhile, any internet savvy types may have noticed that Sam Isaac has been somewhat dominating the blogosphere this week, with a whole heap of blogs getting involved with the awesome remixes crafted by James Yuell and Rod Thomas. MP3 Hugger, Zombie Attack, Alter the Press, indierocker.net are just some of the gents in the know.
Also, exciting news to come in the next few days as Alcopop have signed one of THE hottest properties right now, to release his [a gender-based clue there] debut single before the end of the year… Oh, and I’m currently in some form of musical infatuation (as if I wasn’t already) with Andrew WK – whose gig on Saturday was magnificent, and saw me pop backstage to talk to great man himself, and be gifted with a number of his beers. What a gent…
This City full page features in NME and Kerrang
Wow – this week has been a bloody good one for us, and the music-press buying public alike, as lovable tattooed Brighton rockers This City have had a big ‘ol full-page spread in not one – but two of the nations top rags. Discussing everything from ‘the band food game’ to how they met, they really are bloody great articles – and prove (if proof was needed) just why all at Alcopop HQ love them quite as much as we do.
The single ‘We Move’ (a fucking tour de force of a tune) can be pre-ordered now on very limited edition 7” vinyl (ltd to 500) – and is released on the 22nd September. Check out the MySpace, or order from the shop.
Meanwhile – here’s that tasty press…
